Lunenburg County Woolen Mill

In 2011 I started this quest, a dream of owning my own wool processing mill. I started out with a Romney fleece fresh from the sheep, a bath tub full of hot soapy water, a drying rack and a donated drum carder. I washed, dried, picked, carded and dyed the wool in preparation to hand spin it into yarn. My spinning wheel was purchased at a wool retreat, and I was on my way to creating beautiful skeins of hand spun wool yarn. My first attempts were thick and thin more like art yarn and to my surprise was what people were looking for!  I sold my yarns at a local yarn shop and did quite well with that, selling mostly to tourists looking for locally produced products.

I set my sights on getting a larger electric drum carder to speed up the carding process. It took many years but eventually one fell into my hands.

This carder has been a big help with making beautiful big batts and really cuts down on the processing time. The carder is a manual double wide finest from Strautch. I purchased it from a dear fibre friend whose husband rigged it up to an electric motor. It works like a charm and I am so thankful I have it!

In my quest to have a fibre mill I have once again set my sights and this time I am looking at the real deal, a Belfast Mini Mill.  I have taken the first step and took an Entrepreneurial course through NSCC and AEC and developed a Business Plan. I always knew that the price of a mini mill is formidable, but I still wanted to see if it would be a sustainable business. Let me say that it may not happen tomorrow but…
